We are constantly being asked to reduce our carbon footprint. We have people like Greta Thunberg in the news telling us we should be doing more. Our governments want us to do more. Everyone wants us to do more. It can feel overwhelming. You might care deeply about the environment, but don't know where to start.
Here’s the truth. You don’t have to do it all! And what’s more, you don’t have to burn out while trying to care.
Mindful living isn’t just a personal healing tool - it can be a quiet, powerful way to support the planet too.
Here are five simple shifts you can start making today. These shifts are gentle on your soul and kind to the Earth.
What’s happening: Fast-paced lives often lead to fast-paced consumption. We grab the quickest, most convenient option, from fast fashion to packaged foods.
Try this instead: Before buying something, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: Do I truly need this? Will it bring me calm or clutter?
Benefits to the planet: That little pause before buying something can add up to a big impact over time. Less stuff = less waste, less packaging, and less pressure on the planet. It's simple, but powerful.
What’s happening: Food can become just another thing to check off the to-do list. It's a necessity. But eating is something that connects us to our bodies and to the Earth.
Try this instead: Choose seasonal produce when possible, and eat without distractions. Chew slowly, and really notice and savour the taste. If you want to take it a step further, try growing some of your own fruits or vegetables.
Benefits to the planet: Seasonal, local foods reduce transport emissions and support healthier ecosystems.
What’s happening: Stress builds when we don’t make time to breathe. This might sound odd as we have to breathe all the time. Our autonomic nervous system takes care of that for us (the part of our nervous system that regulates things such as heart rate and body temperature control). However, when our 'fight or flight' response is overactive, our breathing can become too fast and we become more and more tense.
Try this instead: Start with a 5-minute daily mindfulness check-in. Sit down with your morning drink and ask yourself: How am I doing right now? Take some intentional slow deep breaths to set your nervous system up for the day.
Benefits to the planet: A calmer mind helps you make more conscious, sustainable choices. When your nervous system is settled, your choices come from calm, not chaos. That clarity helps you live, and give in a way that feels good and sustainable.
What’s happening: We can often feel disconnected from ourselves, each other, and the natural world. That disconnection feeds both anxiety and apathy.
Try this instead: Step outside. Feel the breeze on your face, watch the clouds and listen to the birds. If you can, water the plants or put a dish of water out for the animals. If you want to go a step further, go barefoot and feel the grass beneath your feet. You might be surprised at how grounding it feels.
Benefits to the planet: When you feel more connected to nature, you care more - without forcing it. You’ll naturally start making choices that are gentler, kinder, and more thoughtful. It stops being about guilt or pressure and starts feeling like something you want to do, because you’re part of something bigger.
What’s happening: Guilt and shame are common - I’m not doing enough for the planet. I should be more eco. It can make us feel bad.
Try this instead: Celebrate small wins. Recycle when you can, and choose reusables as much as possible. Speak kindly to yourself. You’re growing, and your learning. That’s enough.
Benefits to the planet: Trying to be perfect is exhausting - and honestly, not realistic. But when you take small, mindful steps and just keep going, that’s what creates real, lasting change. No pressure. Just progress.
You don’t have to save the whole planet in one day.
But you can slow down, breathe, and choose a gentler path - for yourself and the Earth.
You’re not alone in feeling the weight of the world. And you don’t have to carry it alone either.
